At A Glance: Where To Stay In Rome For Three Days
Visiting Rome for the first time? These neighborhoods are ideal for a 3-day stay:
| AREA | 👍🏻 PROS | 👎🏻 CONS |
| Centro Storico | Main attractions in walking distance | Most expensive area |
| Trastevere | Charming neighborhood with lots of restaurants | Can be noisy at night |
| Monti | Close to the Colosseum | Up to 20 minutes to metro (unless near the Colosseum, which is pricier) |
| Prati | Close to Vatican City | Limited accommodation options |
| Personal Favorite Roma Termini area | Near main train station, great metro and bus connections | 30-40 minutes walk to city center |
1. Centro Storico: Rome’s Historic City Center

The historical city center, or Centro Storico, is the ideal place if you want to be surrounded by Rome’s most important landmarks.
This historic center is full of beautiful piazzas and narrow streets, and has some of the best things to do in Rome.
You’re also within walking distance to the ancient Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona, and one of the hidden gems in Rome.
This area has a bustling atmosphere. You find cafes, restaurants, and some of the best shops.
The downside is higher prices and crowds, as this is the most popular area in Rome.

2. Trastevere: Bohemian Vibes And Lively Area

For a more lively neighborhood, consider Trastevere as your base.
This popular neighborhood is across the Tiber River. Trastevere offers a bohemian vibe.
You’ll find cobbled streets, a buzzing nightlife scene with restaurants and bars.
It makes it a great place to experience local Roman cuisine and culture.
Although it’s a bit farther from the central attractions, and lacks a metro station, the charm makes it still worth the walk.

3. Monti: Near the Colosseum

Monti is an area in Rome that combines historic charm and a trendy atmosphere.
Monti is close to the Colosseum and the Roman Forum.
You’ll find small boutiques, vintage shops and cafés in this area.
It’s popular among young travelers and creatives.
The closer you want to stay to the Colosseum, the higher the prices.

4. Prati: Area by the Vatican

Prati is a good option if you prefer an elegant, and quieter neighborhood. Staying in Prati means you’re closest to Vatican City with the St. Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican Museums, and one of the best viewpoints in Rome.
It’s calmer than the Centro Storico, yet still close enough to be convenient for exploring Rome.
Metro access via the Ottaviano station makes Prati a convenient base for exploring Rome.

5. Our Favorite: Esquilino – Convenient And Affordable

Esquilino and the surrounding area is where we stayed during our last trip through Italy and to Rome. We traveled by train and wanted to stay near Rome’s main station, Roma Termini.
It’s a more affordable neighborhood. There are budget-friendly accommodations but you’ll also find luxury accommodations.
What we enjoyed the most while staying close to Roma Termini was the convenient way to take the public transportation to any main attraction.
It’s also a perfect area if you plan to include day trips from Rome by train to your itinerary.
