Rome’s Must-See Attractions in One Day
Rome is one of the best cities to visit in Italy for the first time.
You can get a great glimpse into ancient Roman culture, admire masterpieces by Renaissance artists like Michelangelo and Raphael, and enjoy Baroque art such as the fountains at Piazza Navona.
You can enjoy great food and dive into the ‘La Dolce Vita’, the Italian way of living.
If you stay in Rome, we recommend staying in the area surrounding Roma Termini, the main train station. From here, you can take the metro to Colosseum, or take the hop-on-hop-off-bus.
⭐️ Tip: Read our guide about visiting Rome for the first time for more helpful tips!
1. Colosseum: The Icon Of Rome

Begin your day trip in Rome at the heart of the ancient Roman civilization.
This attraction is one of the main reasons to visit Italy.
You can admire the impressive Colosseum from the outside and capture some memorable photos.
However, for a more immersive experience, consider taking a guided tour of the historic amphitheater.
You can discover more about the gladiator battles and ancient Rome.
⭐ Pro Tip: Tickets for the Colosseum must be purchased online.
They are not available on-site.
We booked a combined tour of the Colosseum, including the underground section, and a tour of the Roman Forum grounds.

2. Roman Forum: The Heart Of Ancient Rome

Walk from the Colosseum to the Roman Forum, the political, economic, and religious center of ancient Rome.
Here, you can still see the remains of significant structures, such as the Temple of Vesta and the Curia.
⭐ Pro Tip: Entry is free only on the first Sunday of every month.
A combo tour with the Colosseum and Roman Forum is highly recommended for deeper insights into the city’s history.
3. Palatine Hill: Rome’s Famous Hill

A visit to the Roman Forum also takes you up Palatine Hill, one of the seven hills of Rome.
From here, you can enjoy views of the Roman Forum, the Colosseum, and Circus Maximus.
Palatine Hill is a place of historical importance, where the legend of Romulus and Remus is said to have originated.
⭐ Good to know: The same access rules apply here as for the Roman Forum.
4. Piazza Venezia And The Vittoriano: The Altar Of The Fatherland

From the ancient site of the Roman Forum, take a short walk to Piazza Venezia, home to the impressive Monumento a Vittorio Emanuele II.
Also known as the “Altar of the Fatherland,” the Vittoriano offers panoramic views of Rome from its terrace.
If you’re interested, make a quick detour to Campo de’ Fiori, where you can try Italian delicacies at the market.
Note that the market is only open from Monday to Saturday, 8:00 AM to 1:30 PM.

4A. Alternative: Vatican City With St. Peter’s Basilica

If you opt for the route that includes St. Peter’s Basilica and St. Peter’s Square, continue on foot across the Tiber River.
Even though Vatican City is technically a separate city-state within Rome, it is considered one of the top things to see in Italy (we won’t be nitpicky about the details 🙂 ).
The Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel are a must-see if you have at least three to four hours, although this might be too much time if you only have a day to explore one of the best cities in Italy.
You can learn more about St. Peter’s Basilica and Vatican City here soon.
5. Pantheon: Ancient Building

Continue your tour to the Pantheon, one of the best-preserved ancient buildings in the city.
Once a temple dedicated to the Roman gods, the Pantheon is known for its impressive dome and the oculus, a circular opening that lets light stream into the interior, creating a magical ambiance.
Pro Tip: Entry to the Pantheon now requires a fee. You can purchase tickets on the official website or online through alternative providers, though these may charge more than the official site.
6. Piazza Navona: Baroque Fountains In Rome
From the Pantheon, head to Piazza Navona, one of the most beautiful squares in the Italian capital.
Here, you’ll find stunning baroque fountains, including the Fountain of the Four Rivers by Bernini.
Piazza Navona is popular not only during the day but also at night when the fountains are illuminated.
Enjoy a coffee break or have lunch at the well-known Bernini restaurant.

7. Trevi Fountain: Rome’s Famous Fountain

No visit to Rome would be complete without seeing the Trevi Fountain.
Not only is it the largest fountain in Rome, but it’s also the most famous.
A short walk from Piazza Navona brings you to the Fontana di Trevi.
Make sure to toss a coin over your shoulder into the fountain!
According to legend, doing so will bring you good luck and ensure your return to Rome.
It worked for me!
Good to know: The Trevi Fountain is always crowded, even early in the morning or late at night. Want to get away from the crowds? Check out our hidden gems in Rome. One of them is around the corner of the famous fountain.
8. Spanish Steps And Piazza Di Spagna

Continue your walking tour to the Spanish Steps, one of Rome’s most popular photo spots.
The wide staircase leads up to the Trinità dei Monti church.
From the top you have a lovely view of Piazza di Spagna and the surrounding buildings and streets.
⭐ Good to know: Note that sitting on the steps is forbidden and could result in a hefty fine. (As you can see, no one cares.)
9. Piazza Del Popolo And Pincian Hill Terrace

End your city tour and your 24 hours in Rome at Piazza del Popolo and a sunset view at Pincio Hill Terrace.
The square at Piazza del Popolo features an ancient Egyptian obelisk and the twin churches of Santa Maria dei Miracoli and Santa Maria in Montesanto.
From here, you’re just a few minutes away on foot from the Pincian Hill Terrace.
Finish your day with a breathtaking sunset view over Rome from this famous vantage point.
The gardens of the Villa Borghese are also the perfect spot for a relaxing evening stroll.
