When it’s pouring rain during a city trip, I check the weather in the nearby areas.

If it’s significantly better, I take the opportunity to make a day trip from Milan to explore those areas.

1. Milan Cathedral

The Milan Cathedral, officially Duomo di Santa Maria Nascente, is not only a landmark of Milan but also a destination for rainy days.

Located right in the heart of the city, the Gothic building, whose construction began in the 14th century, presents itself as an architectural masterpiece.

It is now one of the largest cathedrals in the world and fascinates with its size, magnificent towers, and unique color.

During our visit to Milan, despite the rainy weather, the highlight was definitely Milan Cathedral.

The rooftop terrace of the cathedral, which offers an unforgettable experience even in the rain, is particularly noteworthy.

However, you should definitely have an umbrella with you.

We were caught by the rain on the Milan Duomo rooftop visit. Not so funny, as there is no shelter on the rooftop terrace.

Nevertheless, we found it worthwhile to see the ornate towers and railings, as well as the roof up close.

Another highlight and one of the hidden gems in Milan is the cathedral interior and the archaeological area beneath the cathedral square.

There are various options for visiting the cathedral, including access to the rooftop terrace either by elevator or on foot.

We opted for the climb up the stone spiral staircase.

2. Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

After our visit, we continued our city tour to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, which is a great destination in rainy weather.

This covered passage is one of the oldest shopping galleries in the world and is conveniently located right next to Milan Cathedral.

The shopping arcade is one of the reasons why Milan is among the most visited cities in Italy.

The Galleria, one of the most important Milan attractions, offers not only protection from the rain but also an unforgettable shopping experience.

From experience, I can say that this museum is a highlight, especially if you’re interested in da Vinci’s work.

4. Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper

The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci Visiting da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” is an absolute highlight and one of the reasons to visit Italy.

The world-famous fresco, located in the refectory wall of the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, is a masterpiece of the Renaissance.
